Languages, they are all didfferent yet similiar. One should learn all possible languages, it really helps a lot whether you go to different places or meet different people in your own country. If you are able to talk to people in their language, you surely tend to leave a striking impression.

Haha... I hear you. I used to have that habit too, now I only pick up words here and there. As you say though, it is essential to travel slowly if this is what you want.

I think they are definitely compatible, especially if you stay in one place for a while to earn some money--it makes sense to use that opportunity to pick up the local language. But you should continue to study that language even after leaving the country or your hard work will go to waste. For me, studying languages has actually become my time-wasting activity on long bus or train rides and a good way to pass any downtime I have. I've come to enjoy the process of studying (where was that in college?)

Well, whenever I head off to some destination that has different culture and language I always prepare myself whether it is about gaining knowledge about the culture or learning the basic language. Mind you it helped me a lot. It is always better to learn a culture and its language. It will make travelling fun for you.
