Overview

Overlooking Puerto Vallarta’s yacht-packed marina, the Westin Resort & Spa welcomes visitors with a lobby of sand and shell tones centered around driftwood displays that look frozen in a tumbling dance. Other artefacts of the sea decorate the waiting area. This sand and salt, breezy entrance sets the theme for the rest of the Westin Resort.

Spread over 14 acres, the Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta leans deep into its geography, with its grassy open areas sprawling with palm trees and outdoor lounge areas, many of which have beach views.

Being located right on Banderas Bay, Westin Resort is within walking distance of much of Puerto Vallarta’s best waterfront. While the sail boats dock at the marina behind the resort, out front the glistening azure Pacific beckons.

The bay is great for watersports such as scuba diving, snorkeling and paddle boarding. Meanwhile on land, there are three tennis courts, all shady but with lights for night games.

Or, take advantage of the pool area, which is surrounded by palms and is particularly nice late afternoon.

One of Westin Resorts big surprises is the fantastic children’s area. Westin’s Kids Club features an indoor area packed with games and movies, while outside there’s a water play area and more games, including a ping pong table. Unfortunately it was closed because of Covid-19 when we were there, but will eventually re-open.

Accommodation

Westin Resort has a total of around a dozen room choices, ranging from family-sized vacation pads to intimate honeymoon suites. Most of their standard guest rooms come with either a panoramic or partial ocean view.

These guest rooms are primarily located on the lower floors, and the ocean views are, in the most part, nice but certainly not commanding. Open your floor-to-ceiling windows, and odds are you’ll be seeing a few swaying palms, the white sand and a glimmering of ocean beyond.

Alternatively, consider classing up to one of their premium suites- it's what we did. These suites are all located higher up (7-10 floors), and most have great views overlooking the bay.

Along with a private balcony, each premium room also has a luxurious outdoor whirlpool jacuzzi. Enjoy a cocktail fresh from the bar while watching the waves crash from your private whirlpool – but make sure to aim for sunset.

If the premium suites don’t quite cut it, consider Westin’s Heavenly suites and family rooms. These rooms are a step up, with full marble bathrooms and thematic decor of color washed furniture.

Take note that some of these suites have garden (instead of beach) views.

In exchange for a beach view, the heavenly rooms come with a Heavenly Bath. This is Westin’s signature in-room spa, with a spacious tub, double shower head and premium spa products.

These spas reportedly cost Westin around US$10 million to install across North America, but the price was worth it. You can see the attention to detail here, from the premium shampoo and soaps to luscious bathrobes and towels.

Higher up on the top floor of the resort, you’ll find the grand suites, which have some of the best ocean views in the house. Commanding views of Banderas Bay sprawl below, and are best soaked up from your private balcony.

Or better yet, soak up the views while you soak in your own private whirlpool spa, positioned on the balcony to take advantage of Puerto Vallarta’s killer sunsets.

If you’re traveling with a party, you also have the option to rent an additional room with more sleeping space, connected straight to the grand suite itself.

Lastly, Westin’s presidential suites pull out all the stops, with the best views and outdoor whirlpool jacuzzis.

All rooms come with the services you’d expect from Westin, including coffee making facilites, air conditioning, newspaper delivery and access to the gym and outdoor areas. Breakfasts are hearty and satisfying.

Take note that as of late 2020, Westin is not offering its breakfast buffets, though individual breakfasts are still included with premium, heavenly, grand and presidential suites.

Other Facilities/Services

With the COVID19 pandemic ongoing at the time of writing, Westin was generally offering deep discounts, including  Puerto Vallarta. When booking, be sure to ask how much they can shave off the advertised price, and you might be in for a bit of a pleasant shock.

Surroundings

Twenty minutes away, the sleek and shiny Plaza Neptuno brings to the beachside luxury brands, entertainment and enough big chain food choices to satisfy any vacation munchies.

A little further along, and you’ll find the Vallarta Casino. Further out, a ten minute bus ride will get you to Art Vallarta, one of the city’s premier art facilities.

If you’re just up for a walk, Puerto Vallarta’s famous Malecon boardwalk, which is dotted with public art, not to mention a plethora of galleries and tourist shops. A good destination is Los Arcos, a collection of granite islands that can be seen from shore.

In a Nutshell

The Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta is a great hotel for both couples and families. Without a doubt upgrading to the suites is very much worth it because of the incredible views, large balcony, and the outdoor whirlpool.

The rooms are spacious and clean. Our room did have somewhat of a noisy AC unit, but we checked others and it wasn't an issue; some maintenance was needed.

There are many pools where to hang out, and the kids club is fantastic for families. Location is also primer, with Puerto Vallarta's marina just a 5 minute walk away.

Food is also good, but we were not able to try the buffet breakfast because of Covid-19. At this time service was also somewhat slow, but this in understandable because all hotels are understaffed at time of writing.

All in all it is a great hotel in Puerto Vallarta you should definitely consider, specially if Covid-19 is still around when you read this- they have some of the best deals in Puerto Vallarta!

Every wagon, carriage and conquistador traveling to or from the coast had to spend a night in Puebla, and the city swelled into the epitome of a thriving Spanish colonial city.

The heart of the city became the zocalo, a leafy plaza in front of the enormous cathedral. From there, cobble-stone streets were laid out in an orderly grid, creating row after row of stone-walled, terracotta-roofed colonial structures.

Along with the Puebla Cathedral, the Templo de la Compañia de Jesus is also worth visiting for its vibrant interior. The Capilla del Rosario on 5 de Mayo is also unmissable.

In the south-east corner of the center, Los Sapos is a good area for eating, and has an eclectic weekend flea market.

Or, head to the north-east portion of the city center for the Artist Quarter.

Rooms

Each of Hotel Casona Maria’s rooms have been uniquely designed to reflect the characteristics of towns surrounding the city of Puebla.

One room might take its occupants to the northern mountains of Puebla state, while the next could offer a taste of the southern drylands and their unique Mixtec culture.

Each room is totally different, making repeat visits a tantalizing option just to see what else Casona Maria has up its sleeve.

Whichever room you end up in, it’ll come in one of four categories: a standard, a double (two single beds), a deluxe or the junior suites. 

The standards are actually the largest rooms, sleeping a maximum of four people.

The juniors are intended for parents with a kid in tow, with one Queen-size bedroom and a sofa bed in the living area. The deluxe rooms tend to be the most ideal for couples.

All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, are allergy-free and come with either street or courtyard views. Other features include iPod docks, cable TV and the standard set of toiletries you’d expect.

Other Facilities

Hotel Casona Maria is more than just its rooms; the big deal here is the on-site restaurant, Santo Menjurje.

A popular restaurant in its own right, Santo Menjurje specializes in modern takes on traditional Poblano cuisine. As the food capital of Mexico, Puebla has a long, rich culinary history, and is home to many of Mexico’s most famous dishes and drinks.

One such dish is mole Poblano, a thick sauce usually accompanied by rice and chicken. The accompaniments tend to be simple as to not take away from the complexity of the sauce itself; a potent mix of chocolate, chili and half a dozen or so spices.

Santo Menjurje is a great place to try authentic mole Poblano. Their Head Chef Victor Rosas not only knows how to whip up an intense mole, he’s also proud of Puebla’s classical food and loves to show off some of the region’s lesser-known specialties.

Don’t say no if he offers you Poblano-style blue quesadillas, ceviche or a mild tortilla soup.

For the full experience though, don’t miss the Saturday night tapas tastings, where you can try a little bit of everything.

After dinner, head up to the top floor, where you’ll find the Santo Sereno Bar. The beers are definitely on the pricey side, but you’re paying for the view, which is gorgeous at sunset.

In one direction, you can see the entire colonial center in all its terracotta, stone and grid-shaped glory. Turn 90 degrees, and you’re staring right at Popocatepetl, one of Mexico’s most active volcanoes.

Order one of their specialty cocktails, sit back and enjoy the view.

Along with the afore-mentioned amenities, Casona Maria also has a 24-hour front desk, spa services and a gift shop.

Staybridge isn’t located in the historic center, though public transport is ubiquitous, and there’s even a free shuttle service for the immediate area provided by the hotel.

If you’re bringing your own vehicle, then rest assured they have plenty of parking off the street for free.

Rooms

Staybridge Suites Puebla boasts 129 guests suites spread over eight floors. Each suite sleeps up to four guests, making them great for families. Even better, it’s one of Puebla’s few pet-friendly hotels.

Suite configurations vary somewhat; mostly in terms of beds. Some come with a king size and sofa bed, while others have multiple queen or single beds. Check at the time of booking to confirm what you’re getting.

Other than some variety in terms of bed configuration, the suites are mostly pretty similar to each other. Whatever your bed configuration, you should end up with enough room for four people, plus a maximum of two pets.

One of the big highlights of Staybridge Suites is the kitchen that comes with each suite. These funny furnished kitchens have stove-tops, full-size refrigerators, dishwashers and compact microwave ovens. Pots, pans and everything you’ll need to cook up a storm are available.

Each suite also has a dining table that’s just big enough for a family dinner.

After dinner, relax with premium cable and movie services on the flat screen. There’s a massive list of channels. Wifi is available throughout the hotel. One accessibility room is also available.

Pet policy

Bear in mind that pet owners will need to pay a deposit, plus an extra fee. The deposit is kept by the hotel in case your pet causes any damage, and at the time of writing was around MX$950 (US$50).

Then there’s the nightly pet fee, which was the same price as the deposit. Designated pet areas are available throughout the hotel for your furry friend to stretch their legs.

Other Facilities

Staybridge has a reasonable array of additional facilities for guests. Despite the great kitchen facilities, if you’d rather take it easy on the cooking then make sure to take advantage of the free buffet breakfast.

The kids will love the heated pool, which includes a whirlpool area.

If you feel like breaking a sweat, try out the gear in the fitness center, which includes weights, ellipticals, treadmills, bicycles a star climber and more. It’s not the biggest gym in town, but not bad for keeping fit on the road.

There's also a full laundry where you can wash your clothes, perfect for long term stays.

The hotel also has a sports facility I had never seen before in a hotel this size: an outdoor running track, with a soccer field. And it's not small by any means.

Staybridge can also arrange car hire on request. Or better yet, take advantage of their free shuttle service, which offers guests transport around the immediate area, with stops including a few malls and tourist attractions.

Location

Staybridge Suites is located outside the city center of Puebla. It’s near the city’s massive Volkswagen plant, making it a preferred base of operations for the many business travelers constantly migrating between Puebla and Germany.

It’s also barely 10 minutes from Puebla’s airport. As reception about options for transport between the airport and hotel.

The hotel also happens to be quite close to one of Puebla’s odder attractions, Volcan el Cuexcomate. Despite the name, Cuexcomate isn’t a volcano; it’s actually an inactive geyser that formed a hollow cone shaped much like a volcano, and was/ is erroneously described by locals as the “smallest volcano in the world,”

Cuexcomate is nonetheless a rather interesting side trip, and in pre-Hispanic times was believed to have been used by Indigenous people to dump the bodies of suicide victims.

Further afield, the famed Los Fuertes can be reached within 15-20 minutes from the hotel. This hill overlooks the city center, and was the site of the famous Battle of Puebla, on 5 May, 1862.

If you’ve ever celebrated 5 de Mayo, then you’ve celebrated the Mexican army’s unlikely victory against an invading French force on the grassy slopes of this fortified hill. Along with a museum dedicated to the battle, Los Fuertes also features a large natural science museum, walking trails and playgrounds.

Another five minutes down the road from Los Fuertes, you’ll be in Puebla’s historic center.

This is where most of the city’s main attractions are located, including the Amparo Museum, Puebla Cathedral and Artist Quarter. The historic center itself is family-friendly and well maintained, though it can get pretty busy on weekends.

While downtown Puebla is a grid of colonial relics, Angelopolis is a sleek, modern business and university hub on the main highway between the city and nearby Cholula.

Speaking of which, the village of Cholula makes for a great day trip from the Hilton, especially on weekends.

The Hotel

The Hilton has all the bells and whistles of a hotel of this class. On site you’ll find a buffet breakfast, fitness center, outdoor pool, business center and 24-hour room service.

While the Hilton has a good selection of amenities and services, the one thing it lacks is easy access to public transport. From the hotel, you can drive the half hour to the city center or to Cholula. Take advantage of the free valet service.

The immediate surroundings of the Hilton include Angelopolis’ popular shopping and dining district. This includes Puebla’s largest mall, the Angelopolis Centro Commercial. The mall boasts over 78,000 square meters of luxury shopping.

Rooms

The Hilton’s rooms are generally larger than you’d expect from a business-oriented hotel, though variety is fairly limited. Guests have consistently reported clean rooms and helpful staff.

Five room configurations are available, with three being variations on king bedroom setups. The smallest room is the single king bed, which comes with an en suite bathroom and writing desk.

For the smallest room in the hotel, it’s still fairly spacious at just over 30 square meters. If you need extra space though, consider opting for the bedroom suite, which is double the size.

If you’ve got an extra traveler, go for the third configuration, which comes with a sofa bed.

Though most rooms are aimed at single travelers/couples, the Hilton does have a handful of double rooms, which sleep up to four people. A mobility access double room is also available.

All rooms come with free high speed wifi, mp3 docking stations, refrigerators and safes. Tea and coffee making facilities are also provided.

Bathrooms are stocked with all the standard toiletries, though in the past some guests have complained of shampoo and soap portions. If you run low, don’t be afraid to contact reception, who are happy to help. Otherwise, room cleaners come around each morning, and can likewise help you out if you need anything.

Other Facilities

The Hilton’s on site restaurant, Villa Rica, is open from 1pm to 11pm. The restaurant specializes in seafood, and is definitely one of the better spots around Angelopolis for good fish. Live music is often played on weekends.

A fantastic buffet breakfast is open in the morning hours, though it’s generally not included in the room price.

Outside, you’ll find the pool, and opposite that there’s a small but fairly well-stocked fitness center.

A free valet service is offered to any travelers with cars. The 24-hour business center is always available for use by guests, and is perfect for meeting with local contacts. Room service is available 24 hours, and is both prompt and efficient.

Location

The Hilton Garden Inn Puebla Angelopolis isn’t located in the center of Puebla.

 Instead, it’s in the well-heeled neighborhood of Angelopolis, which is around half an hour by car from the historic center. The center is where you’ll find most of Puebla’s main attractions, such as the cathedral and most museums.

The payoff is that from the hotel, just 20 minutes in the other direction is Cholula, a cultural hub that’s home to arguably the world’s largest pyramid. The Great Pyramid of Cholula has an estimated mass that’s larger than even the Great Pyramid of Giza.

On weekends, the town is a hive of activity as day trippers from Puebla flood in to visit the pyramid and eat ice cream.

Angelopolis itself isn’t without its own attractions, including the International Museum of the Baroque, which is just minutes by foot from the hotel.

Around 10 minutes by car, the Angelopolis Centro Commercial is definitely worth visiting if you’re in the mood for some shopping, a coffee or just catch a movie at the cinema. Angelopolis is also a good location for upmarket shopping.

Its one big drawback is somewhat limited public transport, making the Hilton best suited to travelers with cars.

Durability:

Durability matters when children are involved. They’re notoriously tough on everything and tend to break stuff quicker than adults. Unfortunately, that means the pair of earphones you pick are going to have to put up with a lot of abuse.

How Much Should you Spend on Your Children’s Ear Buds?

How much you want to spend on your kids’ headphones is entirely up to you. You can go as expensive or cheap as you like, but let’s face it, your children probably won’t be to kind to them, and accidents tend to happen.

It’d be a shame if they managed to break the earphones that cost north of $100, as earbuds for kids can indeed be just as costly as the best headphone for toddlers.

Don’t go too cheap…

Although there is a variety of different toddler and baby ear buds currently available under the $50 mark, I’d recommend you don’t buy too cheap, or your sound quality will suffer greatly.

You’ll be able to find some really good earphones with a decent audio performance if you stick to the reasonable $10 - $40 range, but below this price they do get spotty.

Over-ear vs. In-ear

Experts consider in-ear headphones only suitable for older children (6 and up).  With less moving parts and a smaller footprint they're less likely to get crushed into a thousand little fragments when dropped.

However, earbuds do represent a significant choking hazard for younger children. So if you have a baby or a small kid it'd be a better choice to buy them an over-ear headphone. 

Is it Safe for Your Child to Use Ear Buds?

It's completely safe for a child to use headphones or ear buds, depending on a combination of volume level, listening duration, and the size of the ear canal. One song played at high volume will not likely damage a child's hearing.

But prolonged listening (like 4 or 5 hours continuously even at low volume level) can damage hearing over time.

There's no research on when is recommendable to let a kid use headphones or ear buds. My personal advice would be to hold off on them at least until your child is old enough to tell you whether the volume is comfortable, or not.

When you do start letting your child listen to music, shows, or audiobooks on earphones, consider choosing specialized ones that keep the sound level below 85 decibels (dBA) or an even more conservative 75dBA.

This will help you feel confident that your child isn't listening at an excessive volume. Taking listening breaks is also a good idea.

Naturally, wireless internet is available in the entire hotel for free. In my opinion, Wi-Fi is as essential as the pillow on your bed, and I really appreciated it is cost-free and hassle-free – no tickets or codes needed.

Superior rooms are located in 7th floor also offer a way to enjoy the fantastic views over Gothenburg's main boulevard Kungsportsavenyn: each room has a door leading to the shared full facade-length terrace.

Economy and standard rooms can be a little narrow, especially for long stays, but they guarantee a good rest anyway. The refreshments (with fruit platter included) and the selection of international glossies are a really nice touch, too.

Families are welcome at Rubinen as they count with rooms that can accommodate up to 4 people and all children under 13 years of age stay free and receive a welcome gift when they check in. The recently renovated Scandic Rubinen provides all the basic amenities you’d expect from a 4-star venue, including well-equipped meeting rooms which can accommodate up to 300 people and a nice on-site restaurant where guests can enjoy wonderful meals with a southern European touch.

The Latin-inspired rooftop bar is one of the big selling points. Overlooking the surroundings, it's the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks or to round off the day. During the summer months, this is Avenyn’s most beautiful terrace, and when autumn sets in, the bar moves indoors and transforms into a cozy living room.

I have to insist again on the breakfast which really is spectacular. I still consider it one of the best buffet breakfasts I've ever had, and among the other finalists also happens to be that of a Scandic hotel.

For the active traveller, a visit to the hotel's gym is often appreciated as it allows you to loosen up your muscles. While small it does have a treadmill, cross-trainers and free weights, plus a bodybuilding station. If you prefer to go outdoors, you can always borrow walking poles or a bike from reception.

Location

The location seriously couldn't be better. The hotel benefits from a prime setting close to absolutely everything. Haga, for instance, is less than 15 minutes away and there are several great restaurants and nightclubs just a few minutes away.

The bronze sculpture of Poseidon is next to the hotel, surrounded by the Gothenburg Museum of Art, City Theater and Concert Hall. Universeum science centre is within walking distance, as well as the Swedish Exhibition Centre and Liseberg Amusement Park.

But if dizzying heights and adventure aren’t for you, you can stroll from the hotel down to Nordstan with all its shopping.

And in case you feel like exploring Gothenburg further afield, the tram stop is located right in front of the hotel. Even the airport shuttle's bus stop (Kungsportsplatsen), too, is only about 5-minute-walk away.
