Safety was an issue in early 2012, particularly regarding drug cartels. Things appear to be a bit better though, and we did not have any problems while there. In fact, we found people in Veracruz (one word ;)) to be among the nicest in Mexico.

I have a translator that works for me, who is Mexican, and he got mugged and his knee shattered by the ladrones in Vera Cruz!
