Festivals of British Columbia: A Mix of Culture and Community Spirit

British Columbia is not only an exciting destination for all of the activities and things to do that it offers: you will also find that there are plenty of festivals and events held all over the region throughout the year. Whether you visit in the summer or the winter, and whether you travel alone or with your family, you will be able to enjoy fascinating community festivals wherever you go. Here are some of the best.

Christmas Events

There are loads of things going on throughout British Columbia over the festive period, like the Ladysmith Festival of Lights. This starts on November 27 and lasts until January 11, and you will join thousands of people who turn up to see Santa turns on tens of thousands of lights, followed by a parade and fireworks.

Or there is the Canyon Lights event, which is held at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park from November 29 to January 3. Here you will see the tallest Christmas tree in the world decorated with lights, and there are lots of fun things to do including a scavenger hunt for children.

The 19th Annual Winterfest in Prince Rupert is on December 5, and it includes the lighting of the Christmas tree, carol singing, and tasty treats and hot chocolate for everyone.

Pacific Rim Whale Festival

The Pacific Rim Whale Festival is one of the most interesting festivals of the year. In 2015 it will be held from March 14 to 22 on Vancouver Island to mark the arrival of 20,000 grey whales on their migration to Alaska. Enjoy educational talks, find out more about coastal life, go on walks, and join in with fun workshops for kids.

World Ski & Snowboard Festival

The festival includes music, films, fashion, competitions, concerts, arts and of course exciting skiing and snowboarding action, making it a great time to visit.

Whistler Children’s Festival

From July 10 to 12, head to Whistler to enjoy one of the best children’s festivals in British Columbia. Consisting of music, theatre, dance, workshops and much more, there is something to do for everyone.

Hills Garlic Festival

This fun festival in New Denver will be held on September 13 in 2015, and it is dedicated to everything garlic including arts, crafts and of course food. There will also be music and poetry, as well as puppet shows, making it a popular annual event you can visit.

Whistler Village Beer Festival

This celebrating of craft brewing is a great time to visit Whistler. In 2015 it will be held from September 17 to 20 in Whistler Village, and you will be able to enjoy beer tastings, meals and lots of fun events.
