graffitti belfast wall maitravelsite

Gone are the days when walking in Belfast was as safe as being a crash test dummy, yet they are certainly not forgotten or to be forgotten. The clashes (officially named “troubles”) between mainly Catholic nationalists, mainly Protestant unionists, the IRA and the British Army began in the late 1960′s originating in the constitutional status of Northern Ireland. Nationalists and unionists clashed often and violently and not until the Good Friday agreement in Belfast of 1998 did they end- mostly, because sporadic violence still exists.

The Belfast murals are testimony of the happenings of the time which led to about 3000 deaths (all sides included), and reflect the feelings of hatred and hope of the people during those four decades. The Belfast wall is also known as the Belfast Peace Wall because of messages like the one you can see in this picture.

Have you seen the walls? How familiar are you with the “Troubles”? Please share this post if you liked it!
