How to Enjoy a Real African Safari in Kenya

Kenya is endowed with natural and diverse scenery which is spread from one corner of the country to another. The unique scenery is one of the reasons that makes it a top destination for individuals or families that are looking to have a fun yet unforgettable time when on vacation. However, the best way to explore Kenya while experiencing a wild adventure is taking an African safari to different parks around the country. The most famous ones are the Nairobi, Amboseli, Mount Kenya national parks and Masai Mara.

Masai Mara is a great destination for a safari because of the availability of different types of animals in their natural habitat and its overall beauty. The park which has been set aside as a national reserve can be visited at any time of the year but the most popular time is between January and March, and from July to October as well. During these months, Kenya experiences a dry season and there is also an opportunity to see the world famous annual migration of wildebeests across the Masai Mara river. In addition, it is during this season that the animals gather around waterholes in large numbers making it much easier to see them when on safari. Also, the vegetation is less dense, making viewing them from far off, easy.

Important tips to consider when planning for a safari to the Masai Mara include:

Use a reliable tour operator

Although there are many travel agencies that offer various safari packages to the Masai Mara, it is important to work with one that has been recommended to you. The agency should provide proper information on visa requirements, transport options and also book accommodation near or within the reserve (In this post you can learn what the life of a safari guide is like, written by a real guide). If you are planning to visit more than one park, then consider flying from one destination to another rather than driving to maximize your safari.

Have a flexible itinerary

The spontaneity of a safari trip is what makes visiting the Mara fun and exciting, which means that you should be ready for any change in your schedule. At times, when on safari, the tour van driver may be alerted about an interesting sighting such as lions hunting zebras or gazelles and will quickly drive to the location to give you a chance to see the action as it happens. Also, you might be at the same location for an extended time in order to see the animals referred to as “Big Five” which include the elephant, leopard, rhino, lion and buffalo.

Invest in proper travel insurance

Accidents when on safari are usually minimal but it is still important to have travel insurance because of the various activities you will be involved in, as a family or alone. Companies such as Southern Cross Travel Insurance offer an insurance package for individuals that are planning a Masai Mara safari as well as other destinations.

Don’t forget your camera!

Make sure your battery is full, have a few extra memories and that you brought and extra zoom lens if you have one for those long distance shots. You will regret not being ready for this trip of a lifetime should you not be well prepared!

Overall, travelling to Kenya to enjoy a safari is a “must” for any outdoor enthusiast looking for an African experience like no other. I for one think it is one of the greatest experiences you can have, do you?
