Finding the Best Value Spanish Getaways

Especially in tough economic times, one of the key ways in which EU countries can support each other (even if their prime ministers won’t) is through exchange, travel and continued investment in each other.

So many of the Spain holidays currently available to tourists from the likes of low cost providers On The Beach are the result of huge mass tourism and package holidays encouraged by the abundance of cheap air travel and explosion of resorts in the 1980s and 1990s.

And Spain remains one of the Europe’s top destinations – indeed, much of the country’s current on-hold building contracts are due to a wavering in confidence in the key British (and continental European) investors who encouraged mass production of hotels and attractions to cope with the flow of visitors.

So how can you find a great Spanish getaway and have a little something left over in the bank? A lot depends on how you want to holiday. Spain is one of Europe’s most culturally and landscape-rich countries, with everything from snowy mountains to desert areas, to arable farmland to sizzling beaches and huge protected national parks.

Our advice would be to shop around and have a firm – but not fixed – idea of what does and doesn’t work for you. If beaches are the thing for you – do your research and work a little harder to get off the beaten track. It’s a myth that Spain’s coastline is now a raft of holiday apartments – the truth is that where the Spanish live and visit is totally different from what most Brits are advertised.

So, think outside the box: swap Malaga for Almería, la Costa del Sol for the Costa de le Luz, swap August for September, and suddenly you’ll be finding yourself with a cheaper and probably more relaxing holiday.

We’d also suggest thinking wisely about flights and hotels. You can often find the greatest deals by doing it separately – and this works especially well if you’re wanting to drive. Package operators will want to sell you a week drive around Andalucia for a huge price, when you could in fact organize your own flights and accommodation and save the massive admin fee.
