Set away in the lush Sierra de Tramuntana valley on the north west side of Mallorca, lies the little village of Valldemossa. Once described by composer Frederic Chopin as the most beautiful place in the world, the little town is just 8km from the coast and charms guests with its pretty stone houses built in the 14th century, typically spruced up with green plants and unique on the facades. Lovers of nature and romance will be charmed by the small hotels like Hotel Son Escanelles housed inside the typical architecture. Film star Michael Douglas has even set up a tribute to this beautiful area of the island, the Costa Nord cultural project including a concert hall and restaurant. The monastery where Chopin conjured up some of his best works is now of one of Mallorca’s most visited tourist sites. Local cuisine is influenced by the surrounding olive and almond trees, and a speciality of the village is “Patatas de cocos”, a delicious, potato-based sweet bread.
