Top 5 Best Things to do in Beaches of Jamaica

(Note: this is a guest post by travel writer and blogger Jazz Poulin)

Jamaica is one of the Caribbean’s largest islands which means there are plenty of interesting things to do. To help you narrow down your choices, here are a few of my favorite beaches and watersports to enjoy  whenever you visit Rastafari island!

5.  Seven Mile Beach

Ok so maybe hitting the beach isn’t considered an ocean activity for some of you Mai Travel Site readers but in my books, it is! Head to the West Coast of Jamaica to Bloody Bay and use this spot as your starting point for a great beach walk. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants, and bars to stop in should you feel the need to drink a cold Red Stripe beer or Piña Colada made with Appleton rum. I suggest you apply a lot of sunscreen if you’re going to attempt this hike – starting early in the morning will also help you avoid the peak Caribbean sun.

4.  Scuba Diving

For anyone that’s been diving before, you’ll agree that being able to dive without a wetsuit is a real treat. Take advantage of the warm Caribbean waters and try your first diving lesson or for experienced divers, add some new dive sites to your repertoire. Local guides in the Negril area will probably suggest dive sites like the Blue Castle Shipwreck (40 feet), The Caves (30 – 50 feet), Sharks Reef (40 feet), and Throne Room (40 feet). Feel free to contact the Negril Scuba Center for more information on rates and dive sites.

3.  Snorkeling

This is a no-brainer ocean activity to try while vacationing in Jamaica. All you need is a mask, a snorkel, and maybe some fins and you’ll be ready to jump in pretty much anywhere along the coast. If you prefer something a little more organized, consider a snorkeling tour which can be arranged via your concierge or local operators like Kelly’s Water Sports.

2.  Deep Sea Fishing

Looking for a little man time? Why not try chartering a boat and venture out into the ocean on a deep sea fishing trip. The prime Marlin season takes place in the Fall and Winter months but according to Negril based Captain Stanley Carvallo, the fishing is pretty constant year round.  Sip some iced cold Red Stripes and catch up with your friends while you try to catch “the big one”. If you’re interested in this day excursion, contact Stanley’s Deep Sea Fishing

1.  Kiteboarding

This is for all of you adrenaline junkies, or those seeking a new challenge. Kitesurfing aka kiteboarding has become a very popular global sport. Using the wind to pull you around the ocean, this sport requires strength and total concentration. Nothing is more thrilling than getting some serious air-time once you get the hang of it. If you’re up to the challenge you can either find your own bay and launch from the beach or contact Kiteboarding Jamaica and inquire about lessons or tips on where the best spots are!

Enjoy your trip to Jamaica!

  3. For me personally nothing is more therapeutic then taking a nice long walk on the beach. Normally the beaches back home are so crowded and noisy that they end up giving me a massive headache rather then relaxing me. It is a miracle if you get a nice empty spot to sit there, but the beaches in Jamaica are secluded and peaceful. More then the beauty its serenity blows your mind away.

  4. When I first went to Jamaica I was skeptical about the place but after spending a week there I really loved that place. I have been there three times more for a short vacation. It is an awesome place for people like us who love water. I have done almost everything that you have mentioned on your list. It was quite an experience. I really loved scuba diving.

Everyone should go there at least once in their life and enjoy everything that the place has to offer. It is a delight for people of all ages. From young to old the place has something for everyone.

  6. I have heard so much about Jamaica but sadly never got an opportunity to go there. I had planned a Caribbean cruise with my friends long time back but somehow it didn’t work out. Guess it wasn’t meant to be. Now after reading your blog I am tempted to pack my bags and go there for an adventure filled vacation. I am hoping they will share my enthusiasm and if they don’t then I will make them read your blog so they know what they are missing.

  7. I have been to Jamaica several times now and each time I fall more in love with the place. The laid back and care free attitude of the people is very welcoming. The best thing about Jamaica are the beaches. You wish you could stay there forever. The climate is also encouraging and perfect for having a relaxing time. After you leave from there you feel rejuvenated.

  8. Jamaica is a wonderful place. It is a place where you want to take your family for vacations. Beautiful beaches, lovely weather, tasty food and helpful people, that’s Jamaica for you. Once you have been there you will never think of going anywhere else for your vacations. It is heaven on earth. All you have to do after reaching there is sit back and enjoy.

    1. The weather is what I’m curious about. Its known the Jamaica has a fairly good weather for the most part of the year, but how is that the case? What makes them different from most countries?

      1. Have never heard about this and ran a quick Google search, and from what I found Jamaica has your typical Caribbean climate. Where did you hear about this?

  9. I’ve been dying on going to Jamaica for quite a while. And reading this article has just increased my urge more on doing so! I wanna do kiteboarding there so bad. :p

  10. I love this list. Vacationers will enjoy on the beach. At the palm fringed beach, you can easily find your own spot to bask under the sun. Sit back on the powdery white sand and feel the warmth of the sun while admiring the beauty of the waves.

  11. Kiteboarding is the most exciting and thrilliing sport. Yes it takes up a lot of strenght and presence of mind. It would be more adventurous to go kiteboarding with your entire group of friends. I am planning to go to Jamaica since a long time now.

  12. I would love to go for a good cruising trip if I ever visit a good beach. The cruise offers you a good cuisine, some nice climate there in the middle of the sea and some exciting activities to take part in. Fishing can be fun as a group activity.

  14. I can see the true beauty of Jamaica in your pictures posted along your post. The beaches are places of adventure and relaxation. Going fishing can be so much fun on such outings. A visit to the beach also helps rejuvenate oneself from the entire era of stress.

  15. Jamaican beaches have always been a treat to visit. Moreover, there are so many activities to be done at the beach instead of just walking on the sand, having a sun bath or getting drenched in the sea. Water sports like scuba diving and kiteboarding sound super adventurous and fun that i would like to try once.

  16. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like #5 should be #1. I feel like when you go to Jamaica, you should go for the “irie” — the other stuff you can do so many other places. Then again, I’ve never been, so I could be wrong 😛

    1. True. But then there’s only so much you can do at a beach right? 🙂 This said I wouldn’t go to Jamaica for the beaches, they have them nicer elsewhere….

  17. I want to learn scuba diving! Are there any academies there in Jamaica which teaches scuba diving for foreigners who visit there? I had already learned it in Canada already! I want to visit this place too! Which is the best time to visit there?

  18. Looks like I could only snorkel and beach walk in Jamaica! Maybe I’ll chat up some locals and learn about their culture, if that’s even a “beach activity”…

  19. Scuba diving is my favorite hobby to do! I have already done it in Australia, Spain, Mexico etc.. The experience, the feeling is ecstatic! I would love to visit Jamaica & do the same as my training institute might visit there for 1 week! This is truly exciting to see that my hobby is now turning to professional!
