Auckland is a beautiful city, and one of the must-see destinations in New Zealand. It is surrounded by volcanos, islands and stunning scenery, meaning that many of the main attractions are to be found outdoors. Here are some of the best ways to get outside and active when you arrive in Auckland.
Bungee Jump from Auckland Harbour Bridge
Bungee jumping is big in New Zealand, demonstrated by the fact that you can even jump off the Auckland Harbour Bridge, if you want to experience an adrenalin rush during your time in the city.
This 40-meter bungee jump—and there are a number of jumps you can choose from—will allow you to jump out over the Waitemata Harbor. Not only is the bungee jump a thrill in itself, but you will also enjoy some spectacular views from the cliff before you take the plunge.
Mount Eden
Mount Eden, which is known as Maungawhau in Māori, is the highest of Auckland’s many volcanos, standing at 196 meters. If you’ve arranged a car rental in Auckland, you can drive to the top, otherwise you can walk. From the top, the views of both the harbours are stunning, and you will also see the sacred 50-meter-deep crater.
Rangitoto Island
Rangitoto Island is one of the most popular outings to do in Auckland. You will reach it by heading across Waitemata Harbour by ferry, or you may even be able to arrange a kayak tour across the harbour. If you do, look out for wildlife, like Little Blue Penguins, on the way.
The island is another volcano, and the one-hour walk to the top is one of the highlights, during which you will be able to see some lava caves. The spectacular views over Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf islands are incredible.
Western Springs
If you feel like doing something a bit more relaxing, there is plenty to see and do in Western Springs, which is a park and refuge for the Orea, a native eel. In fact, the Māori name for the lake is Te Wai Orea, which means ‘waters of the eel’.
There is an adventure playground, which is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic, as well as a footpath network around the park. Western Springs is an easy drive from the city if you’ve hired a car. Simply drive on the Northwestern Motorway and take the St Lukes turnoff. Auckland Zoo is also nearby.
See Whales and Dolphins
Boat tours to see whales and dolphins are easy to arrange in Auckland, and there is a good chance that you will see some wildlife. You will head out from the city into the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, and there you can enjoy seeing stunning wildlife without having to travel far.
