Cyprus is one of the easiest Mediterranean destinations to visit with children. The island is compact, safe, sunny most of the year, and surprisingly diverse. In a single trip, families can combine calm beaches, walkable cities, mountain villages, and outdoor activities — all without long travel days.
This guide focuses on a 5-day Cyprus itinerary for families with kids, covering Nicosia, Limassol, Agros in the Troodos Mountains, Ayia Napa, and Larnaca. It’s written to be practical and informative, with occasional insights from our own experience traveling as a family with our son, Teo.
Why Cyprus Is a Great Destination for Families
Cyprus works exceptionally well for family travel, especially with younger children. The reasons are simple:
- Short driving distances between destinations
- Family-friendly beaches with shallow water
- A relaxed, welcoming attitude toward children
- Affordable accommodation and car rental
- A mix of culture, nature, and downtime
For parents, it’s a destination that feels manageable rather than overwhelming — something we appreciated throughout the trip.
Nicosia with Kids: What to Know Before You Go
Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and the last divided capital city in Europe. While it’s not a beach destination, it provides important cultural and historical context for understanding the island.
Crossing Between the Turkish and Greek Sides
EU passport holders can legally enter the Turkish side of Nicosia and cross into the southern part through pedestrian checkpoints. We did this ourselves. The process is straightforward but involves document checks and waiting, which can be tiring with kids.
For most families, flying directly into Larnaca or Paphos is the easier option. However, visiting Nicosia — even briefly — adds depth to a Cyprus family trip.
We got here flying in from Ankara, which means we landed in the Turkish side of Cyprus. If you do some research, you'll quickly learn it's not the best idea.
But, since we were wrapping up our trip around Turkey, visiting Ankara with our son as the last destination, it was cheaper and faster to fly from Ankara to Nicosia, and figure out how to continue.
Things to Do in Nicosia with Children
Nicosia works best as a walking city. The Old Town, enclosed by Venetian walls, is compact and easy to explore at a slow pace.
Family-friendly highlights include:
- Car-free streets in the historic center
- Shaded squares and small parks
- Cafés and bakeries ideal for short breaks
Rather than focusing on museums, Nicosia is best enjoyed as a place to walk, observe, and pause — something that suits children well.
Limassol: A Balanced Stop for Families
Limassol is Cyprus’s second-largest city and offers a good balance between urban life and relaxation. It’s an excellent stop when traveling with kids because it doesn’t require a packed schedule.
Why Limassol Is Family-Friendly
- The Limassol Public Gardens provide shade and space to play
- Long seaside promenades are stroller- and bike-friendly
- Beaches are calmer than in resort-heavy areas
Limassol also has a strong food culture, with casual restaurants and tavernas where children are welcome. We found it to be a comfortable place to slow down after sightseeing in Nicosia.
Agros and the Troodos Mountains: A Nature Break for Families
Spending time inland adds an entirely different experience to a Cyprus trip. The Troodos Mountains offer cooler temperatures, pine forests, and traditional villages — a refreshing contrast to the coast.
Why Stay in Agros with Kids
Agros is a mountain village that works well as a one-night or two-night stop, and staying at Agros Glamping Boutique like we did allows families to enjoy nature without giving up comfort.
Benefits for families include:
- Quiet surroundings and clean air
- Easy nature walks suitable for children
- Spacious accommodation with privacy
- Plus, what kid doesn't like to go "camping"?
During our stay, a simple morning run through the hills led to an unexpected discovery: a miniature Statue of Liberty hidden in the area — a reminder that Agros is more about quiet exploration than scheduled attractions.
And enjoying a swim in the jacuzzi with your kids once the sun sets, followed by dinner and some reading is the best prep before going to bed.
Ayia Napa with Kids: Best Beaches for Families
Despite its nightlife reputation, Ayia Napa is one of the best beach destinations in Cyprus for families, particularly during the day.
Best Family Beaches in Ayia Napa
Beaches like Nissi Beach are ideal for children thanks to:
- Shallow water extending far from shore
- Soft sand for play
- Excellent water visibility
- Clean facilities and easy access
We recommend visiting Ayia Napa beaches in the morning, when they are calmer and better suited to families. A half-day is often enough before continuing to another destination.
Larnaca: The Best Place to End a Cyprus Family Trip
Larnaca is home to Cyprus’s main international airport and is one of the most convenient cities for families.
What Makes Larnaca Family-Friendly
- Flat, walkable layout
- The Finikoudes promenade along the sea
- Plenty of cafés, ice cream spots, and casual dining
- Short transfer time to the airport
Spending your final day here allows for a relaxed end to the trip, especially when flying out the following morning.
Getting Around Cyprus with Kids: Rent a Car
For a 5-day itinerary covering multiple regions, renting a car is the best option.
Car Rental Tips for Families in Cyprus
- Car rental is very affordable, especially compared to Western Europe
- Roads are well maintained and clearly signed
- Driving distances are short
- It allows flexible schedules with kids
We highly recommend renting a car in Larnaca, where availability and pricing are generally best. For families, the convenience is definitely worth it.
Suggested 5-Day Cyprus Itinerary with Kids
This structure keeps travel times short and balances activity with rest:
- Day 1: Nicosia
- Day 2: Limassol
- Day 3: Agros (Troodos Mountains)
- Day 4: Ayia Napa (morning), return to Larnaca
- Day 5: Larnaca
- Day 6: Departure
Is Cyprus Worth Visiting with Kids?
Cyprus is an excellent choice for families looking for a Mediterranean destination that combines beaches, culture, and nature without logistical stress. It’s easy to move around, welcoming to children, and diverse enough to stay interesting even on a short trip.
From calm beaches in Ayia Napa to mountain air in Agros, Cyprus offers variety without complication — and that’s what makes it work so well for family travel.
However, I must say that families who've been to other parts of the Mediterranean (Spain, Malta, Italy, Southeast France) might not find Cyprus as exciting as they might think. Spain, Italy and Greece have better beaches, nature is very similar, and while the food is good, it might not be something to write home about.
Will we go back? Probably not, because we have easier access to other areas in the Mediterranean. But if you happen to not have as much, it will be a great destination.
